What is Candida?
Candidiasis is an infection caused by a parasite belonging to the family of fungi, the Candida albicans. This fungus normally lives in the body within the gastrointestinal tract, mucous membranes and skin.
The most common forms of candidiasis are the vaginal infection or the mouth (thrush), but also the skin (manifested by patches after exposure to the sun).
Vaginal candida infection is manifested by strong itching, pain and irritation, accompanied by dense whitish secretion.
Thrush is characterised by a redness of the mouth and the appearance of a white coating on the tongue and the palate. When the Candida affects the skin, however, it may cause itchy lesions or pus.
What’s more, it is responsible for the following ailments: bloating, constipation, indigestion, food intolerances. It may also give rise to pain during intercourse and cystitis.
Furthermore, candida can also lead to chronic fatigue syndrome, anxiety, irritability and depression.
Causes of Candida
Among the major causes that can lead to an excessive proliferation of candida are a diet rich in sugars, a weak immune system and the use of antibiotics (which eliminate the friendly bacteria in the vagina whose main task is to keep under control the presence of fungi such as candida). Other factors that can promote Candida are an alteration of the pH in the body, as a result, it can lead to infection.
Here are some of the common candida symptoms:
- Nail fungal infections and athlete’s foot
- Chronic fatigue
- Digestive issues such as bloating, constipation or diarrhoea
- Lack of focus, brain fog
- Weight gain
- Eczema, psoriasis, rashes or acne
- Irritability, mood swings or anxiety
- Food allergies
